In an interview in Cypress Trees in the Garden\, the Second Generation of Zen Teaching by Richard McDaniel\, he said: \n. . . there’s . . . a sense that people find strength in working together. . . . The coming together of people in a retreat to sit together\, to dialogue together and to question—one on one with the person giving the talks or with each other—facilitates this inquiry. The quiet presence of each other deepens and strengthens the energy of the sitting as well. Even if\, in the sitting\, something comes up that’s disturbing\, we may see that it’s ok\, that it’s good that the disturbing stuff is exposed. And there is this possibility of working with each other\, seeing what comes up\, what kind of clashes may occur\, even in a retreat environment. . . . It’s a chance to see our reactions and our interactions\, as they play out\, in a silent community\, in communion with each other as well as in . . . a personal quest.

This “being with” is totally inclusive: sensing the breath\, the pulse and movements of the body\, sounds that are noticed and physical sensations—nothing excluded\, nothing judged as trivial or unimportant. \nThis noticing also includes thoughts and emotions\, even the unpleasant thoughts and the unwanted emotions! Is it possible to meet these arisings and fallings with innocence and fresh interest–without judging oneself or ones’ thoughts as either good or bad? This is an opportunity to discover how thought and emotion drive and envelop us—and how\, in stillness and quiet\, these thoughts can begin to fall away\, on their own. \nIt is an amazing and wonderful thing to be in silent retreat\, to be with oneself and each other in the supportive energy of awareness. Might self-concern\, in the light and warmth of this awareness\, begin to atrophy\, to fall away? I honestly don’t know\, but in the spaciousness of not-knowing there is an invitation to newness and  possibility.” \n

SUMMARY:Seven-Day Retreat with Wayne Coger and Sandra Gonzalez
DESCRIPTION:Due to low in-person attendance the upcoming retreat with Wayne and Sandra will take place primarily online via Zoom. Also it has been shortened to be a seven-day retreat\, running from Saturday May 7 to Saturday May 14. \nJust as in retreat timed sittings and talks will take place from the sitting room and private meetings with the facilitators will continue to be available. Also as in retreat\, the main building will be in silence\, with the exception of the afternoon online dialogues as people participate from their rooms on their own devices.  A lunch will be served each day following the talk. Other meals will be self-serve and participants will do their own dishes after each self-serve meal.  \nIn essence\, this online retreat will embody all the elements of a traditional retreat but in a more informal atmosphere. We hope this approach will work for both online participants and in-person guests. \n\nSandra Gonzalez has led retreats in both English and Spanish for several years.
