SUMMARY:All Day Sitting (online)
DESCRIPTION:All Day Sittings are one of the most popular ways to participate in the work of Springwater Center. We come together on Zoom for a day of sharing silence\, sitting\, listening\, and meditative dialogue. The day begins at 8:30 am (Eastern Time) with silent sitting\, includes a talk by one of our teaching staff\, a vegetarian lunch\, a group dialogue\, and refreshments and social time before concluding at 4pm (Eastern Time). This provides a daylong retreat-like environment without the time or financial commitment of attending one of our retreats. \nIf you would like to attend an All Day Sitting\, please complete the All Day Sitting registration form. A contribution of $25 for members and $30 for nonmembers is requested for attendance. \nAll scheduled activities are optional. You may prefer to sit on your own indoors or out\, read\, exercise\, or walk the trails on our beautiful land. All Day Sittings are held in silence\, with time for socializing at the end of the day. Please contact us at info@springwatercenter.org for more information.

SUMMARY:Seven-Day Retreat with Les Schaffer (online)
DESCRIPTION:In this late winter/early spring retreat\, Les Schaffer will give morning talks\, and offer private meetings. In Les’ retreats\, there is an emphasis on 1:1 meetings to focus on the retreat and meditation practice. To date\, Springwater has said these meetings are optional. Les is making a change and asking that people come to at least one meeting. Les worked for many years with Toni Packer and was encouraged by her to share the work of meditative inquiry with others. Les writes about himself and his approach to retreats: \nHow do you invite someone to drop what they’re doing\, put aside their day to day responsibilities\, activities\, favorite haunts and friends\, arrange with family and colleagues to get along without their presence\, and hop in — or on — a car\, train\, plane\, skateboard\, or broom\, in order to join unspecified others in three days of quiet sitting? \nThere are many such invitations. I’ll give you the one I just received: the oak tree at the bottom of the southeast slope. It’s a massive tree\, growing just southeast and below the Center’s main building\, wide at the trunk\, and full of branches you couldn’t get your arms around. If we go down there with a rake\, we can expose some of the upper roots\, but one has the feeling they run very deep and out of sight. This tree will greet the rising sun with a salute to the eastern hills. Come midday in July all the blackbirds will be singing the oak-tree song. At night\, the tree will stand bathed in a waxing moon till a few hours after midnight. By 3 AM your eyes will have to be very quiet just to see the tree’s outline. In thunderstorms\, its great canopy will dance and shake. On a still day\, oak will make you forget the very nature of motion. People come from all over to ask the tree their deepest questions. The tree will speak to our queries\, but in a language yet to be fully deciphered. And it doesn’t change its tune when we decline its invitation. It is a tree to behold. \nA “bit” about myself and my relationship to meditation and inquiry. \nA giant tree once spoke to me as a little child; as an adult I created a computer encryption passphrase from a saying I made up in its honor. In 1973 I quit college after successfully completing my freshman year. One song from that period sticks in my head\, “What Am I Living For?”\, by The Mark-Almond Band. Venturing further from what seemed like a well-worn way\, within a year I joined an affiliate of the Rochester Zen Center and did a few sesshins with Philip Kapleau. I recall being very tight-lipped at that time: one of my Zen mentors even suggested I learn to use my words as part of the meditative work. In 1975 I returned to finish college at MIT\, and by the late 70’s I was doing sesshins with Toni Packer\, who I had taken a shine to from the moment I spotted her in my first sesshin with Roshi Kapleau. Adrift in a sea of words and practices I did not understand\, Toni’s smile and gleaming eyes spoke more clearly to me. In the early 80’s I went to grad school to get a PhD in applied mathematics and astrophysics at Cornell\, splitting my free time between climbing mountains in the Pacific Northwest and doing retreats first at Camp Onanda and then at the new retreat center in Springwater. While on a post-doc in London in the late 80’s I opted to attend a springtime retreat. One evening some chirping insects under the oak tree convinced me to step back — once again — from academia and a short time later I joined the Springwater staff. Living at the Center from 1989 through 1994\, I spent some of the best years of my life devouring retreats\, hauling firewood and mowing fields\, making new friends. I credit Toni with getting me to start “using my words”\, although I have no idea how she accomplished such a great feat. I do remember sitting quietly with her\, being comfortable not speaking. \nUnlike our oak\, Toni did once directly answer a question I asked her towards the end of my stay on staff. I then spent the better part of two decades far from the Center and its retreats making sense of what she said. \nUp till recently I taught physics full time at the local university. Now I split my time between part-time teaching\, physics research\, and co-managing a consulting business. In the latter capacity\, I work on various medical\, engineering\, and software projects. I am currently working on two projects. One has as its goal to provide better ways to limit hospital acquired infections. A second involves instrumenting a classical harpsichord with electronic sensors\, actuators\, and control system software. The system allows musicians at McGill University in Canada to study the nature of the instrument’s unique musical expressiveness given the subtleties of human touch on the keys. \nSo for what did I live these past 40+ years? I’ve been dragged kicking and screaming to accept an unbridled curiosity that takes me off the beaten path\, to look under the hood to better understand appearances. This used to get me in trouble with people\, until I realized to what end words can be used. I came to see how keeping silent was a way to stay comfortable inside a box\, a constructed box\, a disposable box. It just occured to me that the extent to which I exit my own boxes\, I’ve eased up trying to knock down the defenses of others to gain intimacy. I came to trust what I always suspected\, the meaninglessness of separating the various strands of life. Reading a neuroscience article suddenly evokes a curiosity about the mind\, and I’m sitting in a coffeehouse meditating\, recognizing the faces of people I do not know. Sitting quietly in meditation\, some challenge at work may suddenly resolve. If I think — or someone else tells me — that meditation causes X or a meditative experience means Y\, I’ll think about the evidence rationally\, scientifically\, as well as directly/introspectively. Making my bed in the morning\, the words and practices I had once drifted through during my time in Zen made sense as the palm of my hand smoothed out the soft cotton sheet in a simple stroke. With the greying of my beard my intensity has begun morphing into a quiet certainty that I never thought could be mine. \nSo … I personally favor unstructured meditation that goes along with a curiosity that unmasks even my very self. Yet I delight in discussing whatever is one’s favorite method or approach to meditation\, perhaps because I seek the method to my madness. I have always been curious about people\, and their inquiries\, ideals\, and expectations. Lately I’ve been thinking and pondering quite a bit about the various forms of resistance that arise in meditation and in retreats. I find myself listening to fatigue\, anger\, anxiety\, and depression with new ears. My own meditation motto is meager and simple\, “try all you want\, but by all means fail”. When I ask myself how I can best lead a retreat\, my eyes moisten and I think to myself: “don’t interfere with the oak tree song”.

SUMMARY:Four-Day Retreat with Wayne Coger (in-person and online)
DESCRIPTION:Wayne Coger has led retreats since 2001. He worked with Toni Packer for more than 30 years\, and has been a staff member of the Center since 1983\, currently serving as administrator. Previously\, he studied at the Rochester Zen Center. In an interview in Cypress Trees in the Garden\, the Second Generation of Zen Teaching by Richard McDaniel\, he said: \n. . . there’s . . . a sense that people find strength in working together. . . . The coming together of people in a retreat to sit together\, to dialogue together and to question—one on one with the person giving the talks or with each other—facilitates this inquiry. The quiet presence of each other deepens and strengthens the energy of the sitting as well. Even if\, in the sitting\, something comes up that’s disturbing\, we may see that it’s ok\, that it’s good that the disturbing stuff is exposed. And there is this possibility of working with each other\, seeing what comes up\, what kind of clashes may occur\, even in a retreat environment. . . . It’s a chance to see our reactions and our interactions\, as they play out\, in a silent community\, in communion with each other as well as in . . . a personal quest.

SUMMARY:Four-Day New Year's Retreat with Wayne Coger (in-person and online)
DESCRIPTION:Wayne Coger has led retreats since 2001. He worked with Toni Packer for more than 30 years\, and has been a staff member of the Center since 1983\, currently serving as administrator. Previously\, he studied at the Rochester Zen Center. Wayne writes: \n“The essence of meditation is\, to this person\, being quietly with whatever presents itself—being here. This “being with” is totally inclusive: sensing the breath\, the pulse and movements of the body\, sounds that are noticed and physical sensations—nothing excluded\, nothing judged as trivial or unimportant. \nThis noticing also includes thoughts and emotions\, even the unpleasant thoughts and the unwanted emotions! Is it possible to meet these arisings and fallings with innocence and fresh interest–without judging oneself or ones’ thoughts as either good or bad? This is an opportunity to discover how thought and emotion drive and envelop us—and how\, in stillness and quiet\, these thoughts can begin to fall away\, on their own. \nIt is an amazing and wonderful thing to be in silent retreat\, to be with oneself and each other in the supportive energy of awareness. Might self-concern\, in the light and warmth of this awareness\, begin to atrophy\, to fall away? I honestly don’t know\, but in the spaciousness of not-knowing there is an invitation to newness and  possibility.” \n

SUMMARY:Seven-Day Retreat with Sandra Gonzalez
DESCRIPTION:  \nSandra will give talks and meet with participants privately and in the afternoon dialogue group in this autumn retreat. \nSandra Gonzalez began working with Toni Packer in 1988. Previously\, she studied at other meditation centers. in 2003 Toni asked her to be one of the people to help carry on the meditative work of the Center. Sandra spends part of the year in Springwater. She also leads or participates in several retreats away from Springwater each year. \nBorn and raised in Nicaragua\, Sandra has three children and seven grandchildren that she visits regularly. She can be contacted by e-mail in English or Spanish at sgonzalh@hotmail.com. \nSandra writes\, \nPresence invites presence when there is no resistance\, no ownership of ideas\, experiences or things\, no worrying\, no hurrying\, no judging\, no defending–just the ease of life when we meet without wanting things to be otherwise. Certainly we all can participate; presence is free and available to all of us. There is a true beauty in this.

SUMMARY:Four-Day Retreat with Stew Glick
DESCRIPTION:Stew Glick began working with Roshi Phillip Kapleau at the Rochester Zen Center around 1971. He later began working closely with Toni Packer and came on the Zen Center staff in 1979. Stew played an instrumental role in the land search and initial construction for what would become Springwater Center. He spent over twenty years on staff as assistant administrator. He was one of several people whom Toni invited to continue the teaching work of the Center\, and has led retreats since the mid-1990s. Stew left staff in 2008 to move to Rochester with his wife Lisa Schwartz\, and after a few of years he began an informal weekly group for people to sit quietly and inquire together in the city. He writes:\n \nAn important ingredient in meditative inquiry is this act of open listening. Listening\, wondering and not knowing: this can all happen alone or together with like-minded people. Looking together with others has the opportunity wherein someone might point something out that we haven’t noticed or seen before. In the spirit of something Nisargadatta – an Indian teacher – once said\, in an instance such as this . . .’What does it matter\, who is who?!” What matters most is the looking itself – in which there is truly no ‘me’ and no ‘you’. Can we meet together in that spirit?

SUMMARY:Seven-Day Retreat with Richard Witteman
DESCRIPTION:This retreat has options for in-person or online attendance\, and will be facilitated as a hybrid retreat by Richard Witteman from Northern CA. Bells will be rung from the sitting room in-person and via Zoom. Technology will be set up in the sitting room for talks and group dialogues to include online and in-person participants simultaneously. Private meetings with Richard will also be available. \nIn the silence of retreat\, space is here to pause\, to slow down. Space to see and feel and listen\, to question and wonder…to be intimately in silence\, in the heart of whatever we are\, whatever is here. Sunlight and shadow…trees and rustling leaves…sensations\, thoughts\, and feelings. \nThere is room to ease up around judging\, evaluating\, and improving ourselves\, trying to be someone and get somewhere…softening around the impulse to figure things out\, to know who we are and where we are.

SUMMARY:Seven-Day Retreat with Sandra Gonzalez and Susan Schepp
DESCRIPTION:Sandra and Susan have been engaged in meditation and meditative work at the Center for many years. They’ll both give talks and take part in the afternoon group dialogues\, as well as being available for group and private meetings. \nSandra Gonzalez has led retreats in both English and Spanish for several years. She began working with Toni in 1988. Previously\, she studied at other meditation centers. Sandra was born and raised in Nicaragua. She leads or participates in retreats in Springwater and other locations each year. She writes:\n \nPresence invites presence when there is no resistance\, no ownership of ideas\, experiences or things\, no worrying\, no hurrying\, no judging\, no defending–just the ease of life when we meet without wanting things to be otherwise. Certainly we all can participate; presence is free and available to all of us. There is a true beauty in this. \nSusan Schepp has a deep commitment to meditative work and has been involved in the Center since its inception. She has a small collection of poems she’s written at the Center\, including one she read during a talk last June: \nRipples upon ripples\nstretch across the pond\nThe golden glistening stems of cattails\nbend graciously in the wind\npaying homage to the day.\nLeaves released from their trees\ngently float across the sky.\nOne wonders\nis there really such a thing as inside and out? \n

SUMMARY:Seven-Day Retreat with Bob Dattola
DESCRIPTION:Bob Dattola will give talks and be available for private meetings and the daily afternoon group dialogue in this summer retreat. Bob has been taking part in the Center’s work since its inception. Important questions for him over the years have been “What is Truth or Reality?” and “Where can Truth be found?” In addition to pursuing his career at Xerox and Cornell University\, Bob has served as a trustee for many years and in recent years has been leading retreat at the Center. \nIn a retreat talk Bob gave in November 2014\, he explored listening\, understanding\, and another way of being that comes out of this presence\, this hereness. In Bob’s words\, \nIn this hereness there’s some kind of . . . intelligence that works totally outside of this thinking process . . . And it’s not just intelligence. The word I like to use is compassion.

SUMMARY:Four-Day Online Retreat with Les Schaffer
DESCRIPTION:This retreat’s format is dynamic as we stay responsive to the evolution of COVID. Les Schaffer will give talks and private meetings and will take part in the daily group dialogue online using Zoom. Currently\, you can participate in this retreat via Zoom on a personal device from your home\, Springwater Center\, or other location of your choosing. If you choose to participate from Springwater\, you will need your own device to access Zoom at least for group dialogues. We will share more details regarding the format of this retreat soon. Please email Maggy at info@springwatercenter.org for more information or to reserve a room. \nLes worked for many years with Toni Packer and was encouraged by her to share the work of meditative inquiry with others. \n

SUMMARY:Seven-Day Retreat with Richard Witteman
DESCRIPTION:This retreat has options for in-person or online attendance\, and will be facilitated as a parallel retreat by Richard Witteman. Bells will be rung and talks will be given from the sitting room in-person and via Zoom. Group dialogues will be held in the sitting room without technology for in-person participants and exclusively via Zoom for online participants. Please note that COVID rates continue being monitored and could result in changes to retreat format. We welcome questions about our cancellation policy and options available if the retreat format were to shift due to COVID. \nRichard has been leading retreats at Springwater since 2003. He began meditative work in 1971 and was a student of Roshi Philip Kapleau at the Rochester Zen Center for ten years. In 1982 he began working with Toni Packer\, and has been part of Springwater Center since its inception. He writes: \n\n\nRetreat is an invitation to wonder and curiosity. An invitation to soften around our ideas of what life is or should be\, and to enter into the fullness of our moment to moment experience. To be here in the same spirit of curiosity we had as children – where everything is fresh and unknown.\n\nThere is space to pause\, to slow down–to see and feel and listen\, to question and explore. To be intimately in silence\, in the fullness of whatever is here\, whatever we are experiencing. Sunlight and shadow…trees and rustling leaves…sensations\, thoughts\, and feelings…the movements of our bodies. Space to simply be…resting in this presence that is here.

SUMMARY:Seven-Day Online Retreat with Stephan Bielfedt
DESCRIPTION:This retreat’s format is dynamic as we stay responsive to the evolution of COVID. Please email Maggy at info@springwatercenter.org for more information or to reserve a room. \nStephan started working with Toni Packer in 1983\, regularly taking part in her retreats in Germany and and in the United States. Towards the end of 1990\, Toni asked him to offer private meetings with participants during her retreats in Germany. In 2003\, she asked that he lead retreats in Poland and in Germany\, and since that time\, he has been holding retreats regularly in German and in English\, and has also helped to found two meditation groups. \nStephan’s daily retreat schedule is similar to the schedules of retreats held in Springwater\, with a talk being given in the late morning\, private meetings in the early morning and in the evening\, and a group meeting in the afternoon. Part-time participation is possible. \nIn Stephan’s words\, \nI was most fortunate to have been able to work closely with Toni Packer for so many years. I seek to share with others the experience and insights of those years of meditation work\, in the meditation groups and in retreat.

SUMMARY:Seven-Day Retreat with Wayne Coger and Sandra Gonzalez
DESCRIPTION:Due to low in-person attendance the upcoming retreat with Wayne and Sandra will take place primarily online via Zoom. Also it has been shortened to be a seven-day retreat\, running from Saturday May 7 to Saturday May 14. \nJust as in retreat timed sittings and talks will take place from the sitting room and private meetings with the facilitators will continue to be available. Also as in retreat\, the main building will be in silence\, with the exception of the afternoon online dialogues as people participate from their rooms on their own devices.  A lunch will be served each day following the talk. Other meals will be self-serve and participants will do their own dishes after each self-serve meal.  \nIn essence\, this online retreat will embody all the elements of a traditional retreat but in a more informal atmosphere. We hope this approach will work for both online participants and in-person guests. \n\nSandra Gonzalez has led retreats in both English and Spanish for several years. \nWayne Coger has led retreats since 2001. For more than 30 years he worked with Toni Packer\, and has been a staff member of the Center since 1983. Currently he is serving as Administrator. Previously\, he studied at the Rochester Zen Center. He says:\n \nToni Packer asked me if I would share the work that we do with others. While I have never had any desire to become a ‘teacher\,’ exploring the work of meditative inquiry has been my deepest joy and passion for many years. What excites me is this possibility to look at anything and everything freshly\, without inhibitions or strictures. It is through this open inquiry that we begin to learn about ourselves. To learn how we are when we are not bound by our ideas and self-images.

SUMMARY:Four-Day Retreat with Stew Glick
DESCRIPTION:This retreat will be held in-person\, with an option to access talks remotely.  Stew Glick will give talks and private meetings and will take part in the daily group dialogue at the Center.  Audio from talks will be recorded using Zoom; if you are interested in signing in to hear daily talks\, please email Maggy at info@springwatercenter.org.  The other scheduled aspects of retreat are only available to in-person participants (such as timed sittings and group dialogues). \nStew began working with Roshi Phillip Kapleau at the Rochester Zen Center around 1971. He writes:\n \n\nAn important ingredient in meditative inquiry is this act of open listening.
