Corinne Spencer's Photographic Series Splendor
Corinne Spencer is an artist, and daughter of Springwater Center’s Receptionist, Maggy Alleyne Spencer. At the outbreak of the pandemic, Corinne came to the Center where she immersed herself in the woods and waters of the land and stayed, worked remotely, and created for a year and a half. Her new body of work was born out of this time. It’s titled Splendor, a multimedia project which uses photo, video, text, and sound to explore the restorative connection between Black women and the natural landscape. Within this work she opens paths for self re-imagination, freedom and inner peace.
In a recent interview with Daily Lazy, Corinne said, “Splendor was propelled by the questions that were raised as I moved through the deeply conservative social space of rural Western New York—Where does Blackness belong? Who gets to claim public space? Can the Black body know peace? We are excited to share that Corinne’s solo show, Splendor, will open at Hartnett Gallery at the University of Rochester (Rochester, NY) on March 16, 2022, and run through April 7th, 2022.
