Susan Schepp

Friends of Susan were grieved to learn of her passing on September 24, 2023 in the palliative care unit at Strong Hospital in Rochester, NY. Our deepest condolences go to her family. Susan was a good friend of the Center, sharing her love and appreciation of the land and meditative work in her talks, poems and dialogues. Her contributions included beautiful ceramic bowls, platters and cups that are in use almost daily.

Susan’s family invited her friends to join them to remember Susan on November 19, 2023 at a venue in Irondequoit, NY where she and her husband Chris were married. The hall was full to overflowing and many people shared memories and thoughts about how Susan’s energy and presence impacted their lives.

There will also be a gathering in memory of Susan on Sunday, April 28, 2024 at 2:00 PM at Springwater Center. There will be opportunities for friends and family to speak of their memories and appreciation of Susan and her life. Refreshments will be available, with tea and coffee served in cups that Susan made for the Center.
To help the staff plan for the event, please contact the Center if you plan to attend.

Susan retired from teaching at the Urban Charter School in Rochester, NY and continued to work part time on education related projects. She also created pottery for sale and for the Center. She was on staff at the Rochester Zen Center in the late 1970’s. She attended retreats and helped with the work of Springwater Center since its very beginnings, including work building the facility in the mid-1980’s. Susan also served on the Board of Trustees and as the Board’s Secretary.

Several people that Toni named to carry on the work of the Center asked Susan to consider giving talks and offering private meetings in retreats. In 2015 Susan began giving talks at all day sittings and was involved in leading retreats beginning in 2016.
